Toric Contact Lenses
Toric lenses are special contact lenses typically used for patients with astigmatism in one or both eyes. Toric lenses utilize the effect of a cylindrical lens on either or both of the lens's optical surfaces. Toric lenses, while made from the same material as traditional contact lenses, utilize some slightly different technologies giving them the following extra characteristics:
- They are rarely available as short-term disposable or daily disposable as they cost more to produce than traditional contact lenses
- While designed to maintain position comfortably on the eye, toric lenses are not symmetrical around a center point and, therefore, may have a specific top and bottom (typically designated on the contact lens itself with tiny markings/engravings)
- They have the ability to correct aberration of both the spherical and cylindrical variety
